Your Guide to the Best Used Cars Under ₹5L
A Survey of Second-Hand Car Preferences
Recently, I conducted a survey in which about 4000 people participated. The purpose was to learn about your second-hand car preferences.
Survey Insights
I asked a series of questions, including:
- What’s your budget for a second-hand car?
- How old can the used car be?
- What body type do you prefer in a second-hand car?
- Which fuel type do you prefer?
- Which brands do you favor?
- What do you prioritize when looking at a used car? For example, reliability, fuel efficiency, etc.
With this information, I based my research on this video. I included 15 cars that will cost you less than ₹5L.
Budget Range
Most of you indicated you were looking for a car priced between ₹2L to ₹7L, and I found many good options under ₹5L. Hence, all the cars discussed here will be under this limit.
Emission Norms
I’ll focus on cars that are 4 to 9 years old. Due to stricter emission norms, soon, older cars may not be allowed in Indian cities, as already seen in Delhi NCR.
Reliability and Efficiency
The cars mentioned are selected based on their reliability, fuel efficiency, safety, and performance—qualities you value most. The video is divided into three sections: hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs. While some opted for MPVs, they were too few to be included. I plan to discuss that in future videos.
Ranking Cars
I ranked the cars in each category to make your decision easier and more enjoyable.
Hatchbacks
Let’s start with hatchbacks.
#5: Honda Jazz
The Honda Jazz is a premium hatchback. You can find the 2017 petrol variant for ₹4.5L, and the WR-V petrol variant for ₹5L.
Positives include good looks, up-market interiors, and most importantly, reliability. Honda’s engines are known for their dependability. However, it is ranked fifth due to some issues. The 1.2L petrol engine feels underpowered compared to others, and parts can be hard to find in tier-3 cities.
#4: Maruti Swift
Next up is the Swift. Given its popularity, finding a 5-year-old Swift under ₹5L is easy. At this price, you’ll mostly find mid or base variants. Swift is known for its reliability and low maintenance costs, but safety remains a concern due to thin sheet metal.
#3: Ford Figo/Aspire
You can find 6-7 year old Figo or Aspire for about ₹3.5L. The petrol variant would only cost around ₹4L. Known for its heavy build, the 1.2L petrol and 1.5L diesel engines are powerful, especially the latter. However, Ford’s exit from India could make parts harder to find in tier-3 cities.
#2: Toyota Etios
You can find a 5-year-old Etios Liva for under ₹4.5L. This car stands out due to its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and reliability. Despite its polarizing design, if you can overlook the bland interior, this car is a great option.
#1: Hyundai Elite I20
Topping the list is the Elite I20. You can find a 6-7 year old car for ₹4.5L to ₹5L. Known for its reliability, powerful engine, and spacious interior, it offers great high-speed stability.
Sedans
Now, let’s discuss the best sedans under ₹5L.
#5: VW Vento/Skoda Rapid
You can find a 2016 model of Vento or Rapid for ₹5L. These cars are driver-focused and enjoyable to drive, especially the diesel versions. However, they are not suitable for everyone, especially with the high cost of parts.
#4: Hyundai Verna
For ₹5L, you can find a 9-year-old petrol Verna. It is performance-oriented, but only the diesel engine is recommended due to poor mileage in the petrol variant.
#3: Toyota Corolla Altis
You can find a 10-year-old Corolla Altis for ₹5L. It offers dependability and spaciousness, but its maintenance can be costly.
#2: Nissan Sunny
The Nissan Sunny stands out for its space. You can find the 2018 diesel for ₹5L, providing good value for a C-segment sedan.
#1: Honda City
The Honda City from 2015-16 is available for ₹5L. Despite its age, it offers high-quality interiors and powerful performance, making it a reliable choice.
SUVs
Lastly, let’s look at the best SUVs under ₹5L.
#5: Tata Safari Storme
Available for ₹5L, the Safari Storme offers off-road capabilities and improved reliability over previous models.
#4: Renault Duster/Terrano
You can find a 2017 or 2018 model for ₹5L. The diesel variant is recommended for better performance and reliability.
#3: Mahindra Bolero
For adventurous drivers, the Bolero is a good option. Known for its robust body and engine, it can be found for ₹5L.
#2: Maruti S-Cross
The S-Cross offers good mileage and reliability. You can find a 2016-2017 model for ₹5L.
#1: Ford EcoSport
Finally, the Ford EcoSport tops the list. The 2016 petrol variant is available for ₹5L, with powerful engine options that outperform many competitors.
