Motorola Edge 50 Neo: Unboxing and First Impressions

In the Motorola Edge series, we have the 5th phone: Edge 50 Neo. We had the Ultra, Pro, Fusion, Edge 50, and now the Edge 50 Neo. I hope the Edge series will end with this phone.

Overview of the Edge 50 Neo

But this phone, oh my god! You get a 1.5K display, a mid-range compact phone, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, 68W charging, and everything that you need in a mid-range phone. And more on the Edge 50 Neo. That’s what it is; we’re going to do its unboxing and first impressions.

67% of the people who like the article don’t subscribe. Only 33% of people are subscribed. So do subscribe! Let’s open the Edge 50 Neo.

It’s a brown box, and I remember that when it’s a brown box, it smells good. It’s not that pronounced, but it has a very nice fragrance. Inside, we have the documentation and sim card tool, along with a hard case. It’s not a TPU soft case; it’s a hard bumper case. It’s of good quality, and the color is matched.

Now, let’s look at the phone. Oh my god! Look at this! Let’s not talk about the phone first; let’s look at the rest of the things. There’s a 68W charger, an adapter, and a type C to type C charging cable. Everything in the box looks good.

First Impressions of the Phone

First of all, the feel of this phone is rare. We’ve seen compact phones in flagships only, but now it’s in the mid-range. It feels so good, so light, and very pocket-friendly. If I talk about the weight, I think it’ll be around 170-172 grams. It can’t be more than that. Under 170 grams, 169.7 grams!

It doesn’t have a scratch guard, but with a military-grade certification of 810H, it’s very durable. It has Gorilla Glass 3 protection, so even if I drop it, it shouldn’t have any problem. And yes, there’s a plastic frame and a vegan leather back. The feel of this phone is amazing; it’s seriously nice!

Ports and Buttons

If I talk about the ports and buttons, there’s a speaker grill, a USB Type C port, a microphone, a sim card tray on the left, Dolby Atmos, a noise-canceling microphone, volume rockers on the right, and the power on & off button. So that’s nice.

Display Quality

Let’s start the phone and look at the bezels. Look at the bezels; they’re very thin. Despite being compact, it has a 6.36” display. It has an LTPO display, which means it has a 1Hz-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It has a 1.5K resolution display, making it a bright and beautiful display with a peak brightness of 3000 nits.

Specifications and Performance

Now, let’s talk about the specifications. It comes with Dimensity 7300 as the processor. There’s only one variant: 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, with LPDDR4X RAM type and UFS 2.2 storage type. It has a 4310mAh battery, which is relatively light—one of the reasons why it’s so easy to carry around.

The software optimization of Motorola’s Hello UI is quite good, so you’ll get a full day of battery life with moderate usage. But even if the battery is down, it has 68W charging and 15W wireless charging support.

Gaming and Performance Metrics

Talking about performance, if you want a gaming phone, generally Motorola phones have a curved display. Curved displays aren’t that good for gaming, but you can play games on a flat display. It has Dimensity 7300 with an AnTuTu score of 6.5L. You can play games at 60FPS BGMI, and you shouldn’t have any problems.

It has a 4,516mm square vapor cooling chamber, so thermal management is also in check. We also ran the CPU & GPU throttle test, and there was a 90% stability score. When it comes to performance, it’s really good.

Operating System and Updates

The OS UI is based on Android 14. Motorola has promised 5 years of updates for the first time. Timely updates are crucial; as important as hardware cycles. It’s the first time in 5 years for a Motorola phone to offer this.

The OS features include Moto Secure and Smart Connect. It’s a flagship phone, but it has Smart Connect and gestures. The interface is very clean, and you won’t see third-party apps. It has AI features like Magic Canvas, allowing you to generate wallpapers with text.

Camera Capabilities

Now, it’s essential to discuss the camera setup. It has a triple camera setup for the A256 variant, priced at Rs 24K. You get a Rs 1000 off in the introductory offer, making it Rs 23K.

The camera includes a Sony LYT 700C 50MP primary sensor, a 13MP ultrawide sensor with autofocus, allowing macro shots and featuring a 120-degree FOV. Surprisingly, you also get a 10MP telephoto sensor for 3x telephoto zoom, making portrait photography exciting. Plus, there’s a 32MP selfie sensor in the center punch hole.

Photographic Performance

Talking about colors, the cameras of the Edge series are impressive. The cameras have improved significantly on Motorola devices. Yes, the edge cutout is slightly higher and lower, but overall, the quality has improved. We’ve taken numerous photos and videos, and I’m providing a G-Drive link for those interested; you’ll see that even this Rs 23-24K phone takes excellent photos.

With 3x portrait options, nowadays, ultrawide options are available under Rs 20K. But you get ultrawide, autofocus, macro, and telephoto features in this model, which is commendable.

Videography Features

If I talk about videography, all lenses can shoot 4K at 30FPS. Yes, I mean ultrawide, telephoto, primary, and selfie cameras all have this capability. The telephoto allows you to shoot portraits at different focal lengths, from 23mm to 85mm.

The features include slow motion, video mode, portrait mode, and many others like scan, spot color, night vision, panorama, ultra resolution, dual capture, photo booth, tilt shift, and time-lapse.

Connectivity and Additional Features

When it comes to connectivity, you get WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, and support for 16 5G bands, one of the highest in the market. NFC is also supported.

As for the sim card tray, you get a dual nano sim card slot. The 256GB base variant is good, especially if you don’t have an SD card.

Multimedia and Entertainment

In terms of multimedia, you get Dolby Atmos tuned speakers with good quality. The display isn’t huge, but I’d say 6.4” is an ideal size. Despite being compact and having thin bezels, you enjoy a large display for multimedia without any issues. You can get HDR playback on YouTube, but not on Netflix.

Durability and Usability

The phone lacks smaller features like notification lights and FM radio, but the IP68 certification makes it water and dust resistant. You shouldn’t face any problems. For low-light usage, it has SGS Blue Light certification, which helps during nighttime usage.

Conclusion: Is It Worth It?

To find faults, I’d say it’s forward-looking. I can only ask Motorola to provide timely updates, but they’ve promised 5 years of updates, so we’ll see how that goes.

Overall, the camera performance for the price range is commendable, the display quality is excellent with a 1.5K resolution and 461 PPI, and the in-hand feel is amazing. Performance-wise, you can play games well, and the 68W charging is a significant advantage.

If you’re interested, it goes on sale on the 16th, with a 1-hour flash sale. I’d like to mention that generally, Edge series phones sell out quickly, so Motorola, keep your stocks ready!
